THE deciding match for the Division One championship in the West Somerset Table Tennis League took place when Basement Dwellers faced last year’s champions Wiveliscombe.

In a closely contested match there was little to separate the teams throughout the evening, with only three games completed within the minimum three sets. For the home team Vince Court led the way and his maximum earned him the player of the match award. Mike Vickery added six singles sets and Jasper Pye four.

There was less success in the doubles where four sets were added to give Basement Dwellers a final score of 23 points.

To win the championship Wiveliscombe only needed to win six sets during the evening, and this was achieved within the first three games. In the singles, John Edbrooke and David Woodland each won seven sets, with Paul Nutkins adding the remaining three.

The match was basically decided in the doubles with Wiveliscombe scoring a maximum for a narrow victory with 26 points. Our congratulations go to Wiveliscombe for being crowned division 1 champions for the second successive year.

Division 2 has also concluded with title contenders, Wanderers, requiring a high score of 34 to clinch the title. Tthey hosted Drifters for the final showdown. For the home team it was substitute, Andy Godfrey who led the scoring with an excellent eight singles sets. Laurie Chalk added six, with Cas Chalk concluding the singles with four sets.

The result of the match hinged on the doubles where Wanderers prevailed with seven sets giving them a final score of 25 points. Drifters played well throughout the evening and kept pace with their opponents. Liz Fletcher had an excellent end to her season, scoring a singles maximum and being awarded player of the match. Well done Liz!!!!

Mike Newman added a solid six singles sets and Andrew Miles the final three. Andrew now has the summer to get used to his new bat, ready for a strong start to next season.

It was the doubles that decided this match with Drifters scoring five sets, for a match total of 23 points. Wanderers won this match but didn’t quite manage their ambitious target, leaving them in a close second place in the championship. Our congratulations go to Hawks who are this year’s Division Two champions.
